I’m going to be acquiring one. Budget is $1,000. I have a friend with a Solidoodle, and it hasn’t had the greatest reliability. I’ve heard good and bad things about Makerbot, so I don’t know what to think there. Got any suggestions? The winning suggestion will get a picture of a car that I totally didn’t get off of Google Images.

Ultimaker seems to be one of the go to’s. Much higher quality prints compared to Makerbots. If you see something online which was 3D printed and looks good chances are it was printed on an Ultimaker if it was not on one of the uber expensive commercial rigs. Your best bet for a $1000 3D printer is probably a Ultimaker Original. They are not nearly as good as the newer Ultimakers but they cost about 1/3 as much due in part to their DIY construction. It is also a much larger print volume compared to the similarly priced Makerbot Mini (and I have never found Makerbot prints to be of really high quality).

Edit: I forgot a link: https://ultimaker.com/en/products/ultimaker-original

Go with the Ultimaker.

Good reviews, I don’t have any experience with this really:

We have Makerbot Replicator 2 at school and I have no complaints but then again I don’t use it very much.

Seconded - we have a Replicator 2 by Makerbot at the library I work at = have used it a number of times, and it’s always worked pretty and seems pretty decent quality.

Can’t go wrong with a Flashforge Creator Pro. I’ve been using one quite a bit lately and reliability and quality-wise it’s been great. I personally have a Maker Select v2, which is fantastic for the money. (Like $350) The quality is as good as the FF, but expect to put in a little extra work to keep it running smoothly. I’ve also heard good things about the Prusa i3.

I have two Makerbot Replicator 2's, and I use them a lot. They’re easy to use, but the build quality of the machines themselves is crap. I’ve had to tear one of them apart three times. Also, the table leveling system is total crap. The outer quarters of the build plate are useless.

Oh, their customer service is very hit or miss. More often than not, they forget to send you the part they promised.

We have the Dremel Idea Builder at work and I’ve been happy with it, it’s quite adjustable when it comes to layer heights, printing speed etc. It’s a little less compact than some, but still a good size overall. They’re reasonably inexpensive as well.

I have an XYZprinting davinci pro it works decent, the automatic bed leveling system stopped working so I’ve been doing it manually because I’m to lazy to figure out how to fix it. Other than that it works pretty well hardware wise. This model allows you to use what ever filament you want, but I still pay for their branded filament cartridges because the quality is just better ( you wouldn’t thing making a filament a consistent diameter was hard....) and there’s nothing worse than an 8 hour build getting ruined because of bad material.

Software wise I would say it is only OK, if you’re building art parts it’s fine but they give you zero control over extruded diameter and layer height and occasionally however it auto picks them does a bad job and you get pretty weak parts. I moved to an opensource slicer, I think its repetierhost, and it is very powerful. It takes some set up and a lot more fiddling sometimes on a part by part basis, but the builds are generally better with it. One of its biggest benefits is you can review tool paths and have a representation or the build layer by layer, but I would say that is crucial for getting good settings and parts. my only gripe about that program is that it tends to massively overbuild supports which makes them hard to remove. The included software actually did a really good job with those (could be user error, but the internet says its a common problem).

What ever you do I highly recomend a unit that has a heated build platform so you can use ABS material. That is a must if you plan to build anything structural IMO, PLA is just to weak.
